The chips and dips market is poised to reach a robust $19.2 billion in sales by 2020, according to Mintel, Chicago, with sales of dips alone forecasted to reach $3.4 billion by 2020. Nielsen FreshStudy predicts that grocery stores will see continued growth around the perimeter of the store in the refrigerated dips, spreads, sauces and protein salads, especially with Millennial audiences (According to an FMI report). So, with all this growth, what flavors and trends are resonating with customers?

Cream cheese and cream cheese-based spreads showed a 12.4% increase in sales over the last 5 years (According to IRI Research), and paired with trending flavor profiles, show great potential for growth. Cheese-based dips are dominating the party and tailgating, as the top recipes in the “Dips and Spreads” category on are flavors like Buffalo Chicken, Spinach Artichoke and Southern Pimento Cheese. Customers are bringing cheese-based dips to parties and preparing them for gatherings, and when retailers can make it easy on the customer with a prepared dip, sales and incremental gains follow.

Top Flavor Profiles for 2018-2019

IDDBA identified the top deli food flavor profile trends for 2018 as: Southern, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern. The potential of flavor development around these profiles is especially encouraging in the dips, sauces and spreads categories. Additionally, continued Hispanic population growth bodes well for salsas and spicier flavor profiles.

CCDI predicts that smokiness and heat will dominate emerging food flavor profiles in the coming years, with smoked options extending solely outside of meats. Ghost pepper is a hot flavor when used in mild doses, already being witnessed in many private-label profiles at national retailers. One common thread in all of these flavor profiles is bold flavors, and often spice. Rich herbs and exotic peppers dominate trends, and indicate a shift in consumer preference to foods that challenge their taste buds and offer something new.
